Are You Making a Bad Situation Worse?
You can’t always expect things to go smoothly as you run a business.
If anything, you will hurdle obstacles and experience failures — but it’s all part of the process!
The author T.S. Eliot said it better himself:
“Only those who will risk going far can possibly find out how far one can go.”
With that being said, one of the worst things you can do as a business owner is avoiding situations you think are risky and expect they are not worth the effort.
Often, if you put handling these tasks first, you find your greatest success. So how do we address these unpleasant challenges?
It’s normal to feel uncomfortable in the face of risks and threats. But making a full retreat instead of embracing adversity won’t do you good.
Psychologists have a term for that: Avoidance Disorder.
It’s a disorder mainly because it veers you away from challenges that are meant to build you up.
Avoidance also comes in three types:
Avoidance
If you find yourself refusing to join events and network with high-level personalities, you are missing out on valuable opportunities. You can’t have this mindset as a business owner, so it’s essential to overcome your reluctance to escape your comfort zone.
Partial Avoidance
In case you are the type of person who comes to parties or joins a webinar but doesn’t actively engage in conversation, you are only creating the illusion that you are participating. It doesn’t make much difference whether or not you are in the room with everyone else.
Escape
Simply put, escaping is the act of leaving in the middle of a situation. For instance, if your product isn’t getting any sales, you will find it reasonable to remove the product entirely. In that case, you are not solving the situation by making repairs or improvements. Instead, you are sweeping the problem under the rug.
Avoiding avoidance
If you are prone to developing any of these behaviors, it’s time that you feel the need to overcome your fears and venture outside your comfort zone.
There are many ways to address avoidance disorder, but what often works is the five-minute technique.
If you are on the verge of retreating in the face of a severe challenge, give yourself five minutes to analyze the situation. Take this time to seize the challenge and look at how you can overcome it.
Before you know it, you will be able to push forward and feel satisfied with your success.
Another way you can overcome avoidance is to get help. And for that matter, Business Untangled is here to help you get through the complexities of running your business. We present these complex situations in simple ways so you can master the vital elements of running your business.
