Perfecting the Art of Self-Discipline

by | Jan 20, 2021 | Business Strategy

Focus is the key to success, but what if you are handling different aspects of your business all at the same time?

As a small business owner, you have short-term goals to accomplish and personal errands to deal with on a daily basis. So, how do you keep with your enterprise’s demands and balance out your time managing your day-to-day tasks?

The foundation of any successful organization, whether big or small, is self-discipline. Having the ability to make the right decisions and commit to a clear plan helps you stay focused on what’s important and prevents you from wasting too much time and energy on activities that have a minimal impact on the bottom line.

Here are a few ways you can become a more disciplined individual:

1. Create a timetable

Having a flexible schedule is great, but it often leads you to the trap of procrastination. If you want to get things done on the double, you will need to set a timetable and a deadline for finishing all of your tasks.

2. Keep your workspace clean

As much as you want to believe in the idea that a cluttered desk is the mark of a true genius, it doesn’t help you manage your time and do quality work. For this reason, consider keeping your desk tidy and organizing your documents.

3. Reduce distractions

You can’t get rid of distractions, especially if you are managing your business from home. The best you can do is to control how you respond to these distractions. When you find yourself spending unproductive time on social media rather than on activities that create income for your business, you can put your phone away or use a productivity app that closes certain applications and prioritizes important messages.

4. Commit to productive habits

Self-discipline is all about maintaining a healthy mindset, one that is focused on getting things done. Develop productive habits such as taking notes during important meetings and keeping all your financial accounts in check can help you save time and energy. This, in effect, enables you to avoid doing any work at the last minute.

Self-discipline is easy to master. Your focus should be on the goals that support what you want for your business and highlight those decisions that bring the most value.
