Why Should I Be Unique or Original?
How do we differentiate ourselves from other business owners?
The most common response is, “Unique is original.”
My only response is that it raises even more questions. Is being unique the same as being original? Do they mean different things, or do they mean the same thing?
Do Uniqueness and Originality Even Exist?
Everyone has different tastes in music, fashion, or even leadership styles.
We want to stand out from the crowd, but there are instances when we blend with the group instead.
How?
Think about wearing a suit in your preferred style. Maybe you like to wear all black or all blue.
You are free to pick whatever strikes your fancy.
Think about joining a networking event or a convention where everyone else is wearing their best suits.
Even if you wear your style, you may not stand out among the rest in that event.
So, do you count yourself as being unique or original?
What if you funnily wear your clothes? You could say you’re being unique, but others might find you amusing.
What matters is that you chose this way of dressing up. But what if you met someone else who does the same thing?
You may even start a trend.
No matter what, always be the best you, you can be. Don’t waste precious time or energy worrying about what others think.
Is It Possible to Be Unique and Original?
So, what’s the difference between being unique and being original?
When you come up with a product to sell, does the idea or concept come out of thin air?
Or is it the result of inspiration from existing products in your market?
Business owners like yourself always want to create the next big thing in their industry.
You could be coming up with a product that improves an existing idea. But once it hits the market, everyone else will try to develop some version of the product and make it appear original or unique.
That said, there are no differences between uniqueness and originality.
But what you are (and should be) aiming for as a business owner is to let your customers realize the potential value your products can bring.
Here’s a challenge: If you want to stand out in your market, focus on what you can offer potential customers that will make them say, “Where have you been all my life?!”
So, don’t focus too much on what your competitors sell.
Focus on how your products can change your customers’ lives… in the same way as we do at Business Untangled!
