How You Can Work Smarter From Home

Who doesn’t like working from home? Well, there is always an exception to the rule, but most of us LOVE it!  You get to spend more time with the family instead of being boxed inside a windowless office. You don’t have to hassle with traffic – and you save the cost of a commute.  You don’t get as stressed out, and you have spare time to enjoy the things you enjoy doing. Plus, the family pets are happier than ever!

Not everybody has the option of working from home, so consider yourself lucky to have a business you can manage from any room in your home.

But even with all the benefits, working from home, as with anything, does have its disadvantages. For one, there are distractions all around you.

If you do not stay on track, your productivity will suffer, and procrastinating becomes commonplace.

There are ways for you to stay focused while working from home. Here are seven tips to help:

1. Set up work hours

You get to pick the time for doing business-related work; however, if you are serious about getting actual work done, you need to set office hours for each day of the week.

2. Find your workspace

Probably the best perk you can get from working from home is that you have your own personal space. Whether it’s in your bedroom or basement, your workplace should be somewhere with minimal distractions.

3. Find time to optimize productivity

There are numerous ways you can improve productivity. You can use tools like Trello or Slack for managing your time and setting up reminders. Make sure to work on high-priority tasks and avoid jumping from one type of work to another.

4. Find time for home chores

While it’s convenient to do chores while you work on your business, handling tasks simultaneously can affect the quality of your desired outcomes. Set a time for getting some cleaning done, but don’t let household responsibilities get in your way as you focus on getting things done. But there is no rule you cannot put in a load of laundry before work and fold it on your lunchtime.

5. Have separate phone lines

You don’t want your kids to answer a phone call from a potential investor. That said, you need a separate phone line for possible business opportunities or inquiries about the solutions you are selling. Be sure to answer it professionally at all times.

6. Know your limits

Just because you are working at home doesn’t mean you are available to walk the dog or do the groceries. You are still working, and you need to stay focused until the day ends. Learning to say no keeps you from being put off course.

7. Be disciplined

Even though you don’t have a supervisor to boss you around, it’s still important to maintain a sense of professionalism. Join virtual meetings on time and learn to delegate time-consuming tasks to a virtual assistant or remote secretary.
